Magnetostrictive Level Sensor Used for Remote Fuel Monitoring
In the petrochemical industry, liquid level measurement is a critical parameter. It serves as the “eyes” of the operation, ensuring production safety, stability, and consistent product quality. However, traditional measurement methods have several shortcomings, such as being hard to operate, vulnerability to environmental interference, and insufficient accuracy.
Today, we are sharing a successful application from a client in Thailand who transitioned from traditional methods to a highly reliable, automated solution.
Project Background: The Challenge of Diesel Storage
This client manages a series of horizontal diesel storage tanks, each approximately 2.2 meters in height. Their primary goal was:
Digital Transformation: Replace manual checks with remote transmission technology to send real-time data to a centralized computer system for processing and analysis.
Environmental Safety: Address the risks associated with underground storage tanks, where undetected leaks can lead to severe soil contamination and product loss.
The Solution: Magnetostrictive Technology
Magnetostrictive level sensors utilize the principle of magnetic fields and mechanical (ultrasonic) waves to determine liquid levels with extreme precision.
How it works
The sensor consists of a high-strength magnetostrictive rod and a magnetic float. As the fuel level changes, the float moves along the rod. The sensor electronics send a current pulse down the rod, which interacts with the float’s magnetic field to create a strain pulse (torsional wave). By measuring the time it takes for this wave to return, the system calculates the fuel level and temperature with sub-millimeter accuracy.
Key Challenges Solved
The implementation of the Holykell magnetostrictive solution directly addressed three major pain points for the client:
1. Precision Leak Detection
Some of the client’s tanks are located underground. Previously, leakage was difficult to detect until significant volatilization or soil damage had occurred. Our sensor features a leak detection accuracy of 0.375 liters per hour. This high-sensitivity monitoring allows the client to identify micro-leaks early, protecting the environment and saving costs.
2. Simplified Remote Calibration
Traditional sensors often require technicians to be physically present at the tank for calibration—a time-consuming and sometimes hazardous task. Holykell sensors support the HART protocol, allowing for remote calibration via computer. Even if the client forgets the original calibration values, the system can be reset remotely without the need for physical revalidation.
3. Seamless System Integration
The client already utilized a proprietary control console. Our sensors support multiple communication protocols (including RS485 and HART), ensuring compatibility with their existing terminal devices and third-party software.
Why Choose Magnetostrictive Sensors?
Beyond solving specific site issues, this technology offers distinct advantages over traditional capacitive or ultrasonic sensors:
Millimeter Accuracy: Delivers a measurement precision of ±1mm, virtually eliminating errors in inventory management.
Dual Monitoring: Simultaneously reflects changes in both liquid level and temperature in real-time.
Maintenance-Free Durability: With no moving parts other than the float and a structure resistant to corrosion and scaling, the sensor offers an exceptionally long service life.
Non-Intrusive Installation: Installation is straightforward and does not require cutting existing pipelines or disrupting the flow of media.
High Cost-Performance: While offering high-end performance, it remains a competitively priced solution for large-scale deployments.

Client Test
The client has completed the installation of the sensors across the tanks, saying
