What is a Temperature Switch?

A temperature switch is an electronic device used in industrial and manufacturing processes and are responsible for the monitoring and controlling of temperature. It combines the functionalities of a temperature sensor and a switch, allowing for turning on and off when a fixed temperature is reached.

How Do Temperature Switches Work?

Temperature switches can be set to react to a certain temperature. When the temperature switch sensing probe detects an increase of temperature, it opens the electric contacts. When the temperature decreases, the electrical contacts close.


The working of a temperature switch mainly depends on the variations of temperature taking place within an enclosed space. The function of a temperature switch is to trigger when changes in temperature occur.

Once the sensing probe in this switch detects an increase in temperature, then it opens the electric contacts.

Similarly, if the switch detects a decrease in temperature then electrical contacts will be closed. So these variations in temperature can be used to activate a switching mechanism.

Industrial Boilers: Monitoring and controlling boiler temperatures to prevent overheating by shutting down the boiler or activating alarms if temperatures exceed safe limits.


HVAC Systems: Regulating heating and cooling cycles by activating or deactivating compressors, fans, and other HVAC components to maintain the desired temperature.


Refrigeration Units: Ensuring optimal temperatures in refrigeration systems, such as commercial freezers and refrigerators. Controls the operation of compressors and condensers to keep the internal temperature within a specified range.


Automotive Industry: Monitoring and managing engine and battery temperatures. Protects engine components by activating cooling fans or other cooling systems when temperatures rise beyond safe limits.


Medical Equipment: Maintaining precise temperatures in medical devices such as incubators, autoclaves, and storage units for sensitive medical supplies.
